U.S. trade with Cambodia fell 10.64 percent through January

Cambodia’s trade with the United States decreased to $858.36 million through the first month of 2024, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 10.64 percent below its total trade during the same month a year ago. U.S. exports to Cambodia decreased 57.58 percent while U.S. imports from Cambodia fell 8.21 percent. The U.S. deficit with Cambodia was $818.32 million.

Through January, the top five among the nation’s airports, seaports and border crossings were No. 1 Port of Los Angeles; No. 2 Port of Newark; No. 3 Port of Savannah, GA; No. 4 Port of Long Beach; and No. 5 Port of Virginia. During the same period the previous year, the top five were No. 1 Port of Los Angeles; No. 2 Port of Newark; No. 3 Port of Savannah, GA; No. 4 Port of Long Beach and No. 5 Port of Houston. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 75.81 percent of Cambodia’s U.S. trade.

Among those top five:

  • Trade with No. 1 Port of Los Angeles rose 26.35 percent to $396.44 million.
    Exports fell 39.55 percent to $4.08 million. Imports rose 27.8 percent to $392.36 million.
  • Trade with No. 2 Port of Newark fell 14.57 percent to $106.96 million.
    Exports rose 28.45 percent to $714,428. Imports fell 14.77 percent to $106.24 million.
  • Trade with No. 3 Port of Savannah, GA fell 39.09 percent to $68.79 million.
    Exports fell 35.33 percent to $1.46 million. Imports fell 39.17 percent to $67.34 million.
  • Trade with No. 4 Port of Long Beach fell 37.91 percent to $44.51 million.
    Exports rose 124.15 percent to $2.68 million. Imports fell 40.66 percent to $41.83 million.
  • Trade with No. 5 Port of Virginia fell 15.44 percent to $34.01 million.
    Exports rose 44.21 percent to $881,681. Imports fell 16.36 percent to $33.13 million.

Cambodia ranked No. 48 among the United States’ top trade partners through the current period. In the same period one year ago, it ranked No. 46.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $414.38 billion, down 1.3 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports dropped 2.96 percent to $160.58 billion; imports dropped 0.22 percent to $253.8 billion. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Mexico; Canada; China; Germany and Japan. The overall trade deficit was $93.21 billion, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $88.86 billion.

The top five U.S. exports to Cambodia by value through January were the categories of Passenger vehicles; Soybean oilcake; Sugar and starch residues; Insulated wire, cable; and Motor vehicle parts, respectively. They accounted for 47.1 percent of total exports to Cambodia.

The value of the top five categories of U.S. imports from Cambodia –– Solar panels, etc.; Handbags, wallets; Rubber tires; Sweaters, pullovers, vests, knit or crocheted; and Women’s or girls’ suits, not knit –– accounted for 48.93 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to Cambodia:

  • Passenger vehicles fell 29.68 percent compared to last year to $3.63 million.
  • Soybean oilcake totaled $2.14 million. The previous year, there were no exports in this category.
  • Sugar and starch residues rose 281.92 percent compared to last year to $1.57 million.
  • Insulated wire, cable totaled $1.13 million. The previous year, there were no exports in this category.
  • Motor vehicle parts rose 13.95 percent compared to last year to $969,825.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from Cambodia:

  • Solar panels, etc. fell 5 percent compared to last year to $152.71 million.
  • Handbags, wallets fell 10.35 percent compared to last year to $118.27 million.
  • Rubber tires rose 156.53 percent compared to last year to $47.18 million.
  • Sweaters, pullovers, vests, knit or crocheted fell 10.2 percent compared to last year to $46.33 million.
  • Women’s or girls’ suits, not knit rose 4.51 percent compared to last year to $45.66 million.

In the latest annual figures available, Cambodia recorded $11.88 billion in trade with the United States. Total U.S. exports to Cambodia were $ 305.35 million and imports from Cambodia were $11.58 billion. The U.S. deficit with Cambodia was $11.27 billion.
