The category ranked 196 through October among the roughly 1,265 export commodity groupings as classified by Census. It ranked No. 204 for the last full year with a total value of $1.3 billion, a $85.56 million, 6.19 percent decrease from the 2016 total.

Through October of this year the top trade partners were No. 1 Germany, No. 2 Italy, No. 3 China, No. 4 Canada and No. 5 Japan. The leading gateways were No. 1 Port of Seattle, Wash., No. 2 Los Angeles International Airport, No. 3 Chicago O’Hare International Airport, No. 4 Port of Savannah, Ga. and No. 5 Port of Tacoma, Wash..

  • Port of Tacoma, Wash. fell 38.21 percent compared to last year to $73.04 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign markets:

  • U.S. exports to No. 1 Germany increased $5.84 million, 3.6 percent, (14.32 percent of all shipments).
  • U.S. exports to No. 2 Italy increased $42.62 million, 37.25 percent, (13.38 percent market share).
  • U.S. exports to No. 3 China increased $10.19 million, 11.34 percent, (8.52 percent market share).
  • U.S. exports to No. 4 Canada increased $16.26 million, 22.35 percent, (7.59 percent market share).
  • U.S. exports to No. 5 Japan decreased $14.9 million, 16.26 percent, (6.54 percent of all shipments).

All totaled, 50.35 percent of all these Misc. articles of stone, mineral substance exports from the United States were shipped to the top five markets through October of this year. That is equal to $590.77 million of the $1.17 billion total.
