U.S. exports of Misc. articles of stone, mineral substance increased 3.60 percent from $376.27 million to $389.83 million through the first three months of 2019 when compared to the same period the previous year, according to WorldCity analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau data.

The category ranked 174 through March among the roughly 1,265 export commodity groupings as classified by Census. It ranked No. 185 for the last full year with a total value of $1.4 billion, a $103.71 million, 8.00 percent increase from the 2017 total.

Through March of this year the top trade partners were No. 1 Germany, No. 2 Italy, No. 3 Japan, No. 4 China and No. 5 Canada. The leading gateways were No. 1 Los Angeles International Airport, No. 2 Port of Seattle, Wash., No. 3 Chicago O’Hare International Airport, No. 4 Port of Savannah, Ga. and No. 5 Port of New York.

  • Port of Savannah, Ga. fell 3.79 percent compared to last year to $25.1 million.
  • Port of New York fell 26.86 percent compared to last year to $14.84 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign markets:

  • U.S. exports to No. 1 Germany increased $12.81 million, 25.87 percent, (15.99 percent of all shipments).
  • U.S. exports to No. 2 Italy decreased $41.55 million, 52.24 percent, (9.75 percent market share).
  • U.S. exports to No. 3 Japan increased $5.65 million, 24.54 percent, (7.36 percent market share).
  • U.S. exports to No. 4 China increased $1.64 million, 6.46 percent, (6.94 percent market share).
  • U.S. exports to No. 5 Canada increased $1.08 million, 4.22 percent, (6.88 percent of all shipments).

All totaled, 46.92 percent of all these Misc. articles of stone, mineral substance exports from the United States were shipped to the top five markets through March of this year. That is equal to $182.89 million of the $389.83 million total.
