U.S. exports of Potassic fertilizers increased 8.75 percent from $659.93 million to $717.68 million through the first eight months of 2019 when compared to the same period the previous year, according to WorldCity analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau data.

The category ranked 235 through August among the roughly 1,265 export commodity groupings as classified by Census. It ranked No. 259 for the last full year with a total value of $1.05 billion, a $230.31 million, 28.13 percent increase from the 2017 total.

Through August of this year the top trade partners were No. 1 China, No. 2 Brazil, No. 3 South Korea, No. 4 Japan and No. 5 Australia. The leading gateways were No. 1 Port of Portland, Ore., No. 2 Port of Galveston, Texas, No. 3 Port of Tampa, Fla., No. 4 Port Huron Blue Water Bridge, Mich. and No. 5 Detroit Ambassador Bridge, Mich..

  • Port of Tampa, Fla. fell 46.33 percent compared to last year to $8.43 million.
  • Port Huron Blue Water Bridge, Mich. rose 27.83 percent compared to last year to $6.9 million.
  • Detroit Ambassador Bridge, Mich. fell 5.5 percent compared to last year to $6.55 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign markets:

  • U.S. exports to No. 1 China increased $58.63 million, 48.85 percent, (24.89 percent of all shipments).
  • U.S. exports to No. 2 Brazil decreased $31.48 million, 21.47 percent, (16.05 percent market share).
  • U.S. exports to No. 3 South Korea increased $30.41 million, 43.16 percent, (14.05 percent market share).
  • U.S. exports to No. 4 Japan increased $6.73 million, 10.76 percent, (9.65 percent market share).
  • U.S. exports to No. 5 Australia increased $5.22 million, 10.63 percent, (7.57 percent of all shipments).

All totaled, 72.21 percent of all these Potassic fertilizers exports from the United States were shipped to the top five markets through August of this year. That is equal to $518.26 million of the $717.68 million total.
