U.S. imports of Bread, pastry, cakes increased 11.51 percent from $4.07 billion to $4.54 billion through the first 10 months of 2018 when compared to the same period the previous year, according to WorldCity analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau data.

The category ranked 90 through October among the roughly 1,265 import commodity groupings as classified by Census. It ranked No. 92 for the last full year with a total value of $4.96 billion, a $444.72 million, 9.85 percent increase from the 2016 total.

Through October of this year the leading sources were No. 1 Canada, No. 2 Mexico, No. 3 France, No. 4 Italy and No. 5 Germany.   • Port Huron Blue Water Bridge, Mich. rose 25.36 percent compared to last year to $494.01 million.

There are several hundred airports, seaports and border crossings that handle international trade; they are, in turn, part of the roughly four dozen U.S. Customs districts.

Highlights for the top five foreign markets:

  • U.S. imports from No. 1 Canada increased $289.3 million, 15.47 percent, (47.54 percent of all shipments).
  • U.S. imports from No. 2 Mexico increased $44.99 million, 4.77 percent, (21.75 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 3 France increased $30.81 million, 23.49 percent, (3.57 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 4 Italy increased $23.91 million, 17.53 percent, (3.53 percent market share).
  • U.S. imports from No. 5 Germany increased $24.43 million, 22.57 percent, (2.92 percent of all shipments).

All totaled, 79.31 percent of all these Bread, pastry, cakes imports to the United States were shipped from the top five markets through October of this year. That is equal to $3.6 billion of the $4.54 billion total.
